Pukas surfboards were first made in the 1970’s in garages, farmhouses or old sawmills. In that moment, the idea was to create top of the line surfboards for the European market. The OLATU factory, created in 1988, was the result of the experience acquired from the first professional shapers and glassers coming from overseas.

We are convinced that quality is not a mere goal to achieve, but a continuous project which requires one to be constantly aware of the evolution of the industry. This is why we focus our efforts on a mixture of 3 basic strategic variables: shapers, materials, and human capital.

In OLATU we have always worked with the best professionals available. Many legendary names have passes through the shaping bays of Pukas such as: Maurice Cole, Jeff Johnston, Glen Minami, Brian Ingham, Ron Roush, Bruce Mckee, Ronnie Woodward, Reno Abellira and others. Today we maintain the same policy and are currently working with the best international shapers such as Peter Daniels, Luke Short, Pat Rawson, Chilli, Jean Pierre Stark, Darren Handley, Greg Webber, Gunther Rhon, Greg and Jed Noll and others

Our experience in the market and acquired know-how after 30 years of making surfboards has also allowed us to work with the best materials in the industry such as Fin Control System (FCS), Hexcel fibreglass, Silmar laminating resin and Burford foam. This has been an obvious factor in the high quality achieved from our finished product.

The last but not least variable in our mixture is the human capital. The production of top of the line surfboards is a process which still requires a high degree of know-how among the human link in the chain of process. We work with the best professionals coming from countries where the surf culture has been imbedded for various generations. Our workers come Hawaii, Australia, California, South Africa and Brazil.

Each Pukas surfboard has a seal of quality. The EUROPEAN SURF logo guarantees that the board has been produced in Olatu under a strict policy of quality control. Names in the international professional circuits who ride our boards are many, these being the most outstanding: Sunny Garcia (Hawaii), Adriano de Souza (Brazil), Eneko Acero (Basque Country), Aritz Aranburu (Basque Country), Asier Munian (Basque Country), Ibon Amatrian (Basque Country), Tiago Pires (Portugal), Joan Duru (Francia), Marc Lacomare (Francia), Tim Boal (Francia) and many more.

Our experience and know-how acquired after all these years is recognized internationally throughout the surfing world and has allowed us to produce under license other top level makes of surfboards as well as out traditional Pukas brand such as Lost, Al Merrick, Eric Arakawa and DHD.
